Different Types Of Contact Lenses

Different Types of Contact Lenses

According to the Food and Administration, there are two types of contact lenses, soft and rigid gas permeable (RGP). At Elio’s Optical Vision Center in Miami, FL, we offer both types and a vision exam so that the prescription you get from our optometrist on your lenses is correct.

Since contact lenses require a prescription, you need an eye exam. The lenses should be fitted by an optometry professional. The FDA classifies all contact lenses as medical devices, whether they are strictly for cosmetic purposes or for vision correction.

Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses

RGP lenses are made from a slightly flexible plastic material that allows oxygen to pass through to the eye. They are resistant to buildup and more durable than soft lenses. These also last longer, which makes them less expensive in the long run. They are also a better option if you suffer from astigmatism, keratoconus, or allergies. Hard lenses take longer to get used to than soft lenses and are available in both normal and extended wear.

Soft Lenses

Soft lenses are made from a soft flexible plastic and allow oxygen to flow to your eyes. Adjusting to wearing these is easier than hard lenses and can take only a few days. With soft lenses, you can choose the extended wear option, which you can actually sleep with and wear for a week. Some can last for up to 30 days, however, soft lenses need to be removed at least once a week to be cleaned. Daily lenses are another type of soft lenses that should be worn one day and not kept in while you sleep. You can also purchase soft lenses in a different color than your original eye color.
