Ophthalmic Lenses

The Benefits of Ophthalmic Lenses

When dealing with eyeglasses, there is much more to them than just their basic functions. Lenses have a lot of subtle aspects to them that make them better or worse for certain people, and whether a lens is the superior option is entirely subjective. We here at Elio's Optical Vision Center in Miami, FL, are here to explain what ophthalmic lenses can do for you and your vision health.

How Do Ophthalmic Lenses Benefit My Vision?

The benefit of ophthalmic lenses will ultimately depend on what you are looking to get out of them. These lenses are not inherently needed by every person with corrective lenses; typically, the goal of getting these lenses is to correct their near- or farsightedness. Specifically, these are caused as a result of people whose eyes are unable to make their focal point meet their retinas. However, this is not the extent of the visual improvements these lenses are able to provide. People who suffer from astigmatism are also known to show improvement when using these kinds of lenses. Special ophthalmic lenses will typically require that you get a prescription.

As far as the lenses themselves, they can be worn in different shapes, sizes, makes, and styles. For example, a person can have ophthalmic lenses in their eyeglasses, or if they would prefer going without eyeglasses, they have the option of contact lenses as well. As far as makes go, people may choose either glass or plastic, although the latter is much more common and popular due to how durable and how lightweight they are, but some still prefer going with glass. For obvious reasons, plastic contact lenses are also more commonly worn than glass ones, though that is not to say that no glass contact lenses exist.

Wearing Ophthalmic Lenses

When it comes to how you wear them, you have multiple options at your disposal. The first two are self-explanatory: you either wear them as eyeglasses or as contacts. Eyeglasses just become a part of your look, while contact lenses are usually by design meant to not be noticed. However, the third option comes in the form of going with permanent contact lenses. This process is an expensive one, but it has the benefit of being useful for if you have significant damage to your eye.
