Contact Lenses for Astigmatism

If you’ve recently been diagnosed with astigmatism, you may have some questions. One of these might be whether you can wear contact lenses or if you will need eyeglasses to see clearly. When you visit Elio’s Optical Vision Center in Miami, FL, our optometrist can help you make an informed decision on which option would be best for your condition. In the meantime, you can learn more about astigmatism and how it is treated!

Understanding Astigmatism

Astigmatism means that your cornea is irregularly shaped. A normal cornea is rounded, which allows the light to enter and focus properly on the retina. With astigmatism, the cornea is more oblong. This impacts the way light enters your eye and prevents it from focusing on the retina, which causes your vision to be blurry at any distance. In addition, astigmatism can cause frequent squinting, eye strain, headaches, and impacts your vision at night, so it is important that it is addressed as soon as possible.

Treating Astigmatism

In order to properly treat astigmatism, an eye exam is required. This will also help our optometrist determine if any other refractive errors are present, as astigmatism can occur alongside others. We will provide you with a full diagnosis after completing a comprehensive eye exam.  You also need a vision exam to obtain your prescription. Our optometrist will work closely with you to determine which vision correction option would be best for your condition and lifestyle.

Choosing Corrective Lenses

In the past, those diagnosed with astigmatism could only choose eyeglasses for sharper vision, however, that is no longer the case. While glasses are still an option, you can also choose contact lenses that are designed specifically for astigmatism. Some of these include toric lenses, gas permeable lenses, and hybrid lenses. Depending on your lifestyle and preferences, each of these can be beneficial in providing clearer vision. Our optometrist can recommend the contact lenses that would be suitable for your needs.
