Treatment for Styes

A stye is a bump that appears on your eyelid. It often resembles a pimple and can be incredibly tender and uncomfortable. Typically, these form on the outside of the eyelid, but they can also appear on the inside. The condition can usually be managed at home, but there are times you might need help from an optician. If this is the case, our team at Elio’s Optical in Miami is here to help.

What Causes a Stye?

Most often, a stye is a response to some sort of infection, such as a staph infection. However, they can also occur if the oil glands in your eyelids become blocked. A stye generally isn’t contagious, but if your eye is infected and you rub it, you could spread bacteria to others.

Anyone can experience a stye, and they are very common. There are some people, though, that may be at higher risk of developing a stye than others. These include people who have conditions such as the following:

  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Dandruff
  • Rosacea

People who wear contact lenses are also more likely to develop a stye.

How Is a Stye Treated?

In most cases, a stye will go away on its own in a few days or a couple of weeks with a little care at home. Some good steps to follow include:

  • Keep your face, hands, and eyes clean.
  • Apply a warm, wet compress to your infected eyelid three to five times per day for five to ten minutes at a time.
  • Do not touch, rub, or squeeze the area.
  • Avoid makeup and cosmetic eye cream while it is present.
  • Switch from contacts to your eyeglasses until it has healed.

If you don’t see any difference after several days of taking these steps or you are in pain, it’s time to see our optician. We can provide you with antibiotic ointments or creams that can help fight the stye-causing bacteria.
